DIVING CABO

What can be more exciting than diving with sharks? Our unique shark diving site, ‘Gordo Banks’, is located 6 miles offshore and only 10miles from San Jose del Cabo. Gordo Banks comprises two seamounts, one at approximately 35m/120’, and another at around 75m/250’ – together they provide the best shark diving Cabo has to offer, just a 40-minute ride from shore!

Schools of Jacks, Mackerels, Tunas and Snapper, large Groupers, Devil Rays, Cow-Nose Rays and Mobula Rays are common visitors at this offshore reef. And of course, all this life brings in predators – Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks and Silky Sharks among others, this is a deep-water site and almost anything can roll by. This is a truly unique place where huge numbers of sharks can be seen – however it is very important to understand that it is not an aquarium, and sightings are not guaranteed.

During the boat ride out, you will receive a detailed and thorough briefing on how to dive the site correctly, safety procedures, shark behaviour, and more from our highly experienced Dive Guides. And then you drop into the blue – with no reference, you execute a controlled descent to the depth decided by your guide, and float through the endless ocean while looking for sharks.

At this, one of our favourite dive sites, you can experiment with diving a little deeper around two large underwater pinnacles. Both pinnacles act as cleaning stations, with huge schools of cleaner wrasse, barberfish, and various other reef fish, numerous species of larger pelagic fish and mammals such as turtles, rays and sharks, stop by for their weekly grooming appointment. The pinnacles quickly give way to a steep drop off the south side of the site, allowing for most depths of TecRec diving to be easily achieved.

Just a few minutes from the marina in Cabo San Lucas lies Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, a dive haven where all manner of wildlife can be seen, from schools of rays, turtles and sealions to the occasional sighting of whale sharks and manta rays! Running along the pinnacle towards lands end, the topographical highlights of the well renowned Pelican rock and Neptunes finger, give way to a seemingly endless drop off, where canyons and ravines run parallel to shore for more than half a mile, leading out to the pacific ocean. With such close proximity to the worlds largest and diverse ocean, anything could pass by at any time!

Live-A-Board Diving vs Diving in Los Cabos

Many of the best dive sites in the world are accessible only via live-a-board style accommodation. This includes the “near-by” destinations of the Socorro Islands, the Cocos Islands, and the Galapagos archipelago. The diving in these spots is world renowned for its abundance and variety, and in some diver’s opinions, this cannot be matched. We respectfully disagree.

Gordo Banks and the surrounding sites offer the same abundance, species, and variety as the much further flung and famous sites in the Pacific Ocean.

The big advantage over diving on shore-based sites is the flexibility that is afforded to you. You have the choice of your accommodation, food & beverages, and activities. You’ll often hear our instructors talking about playing golf the afternoon after a great morning dive! Check out our “Los Cabos” page for the region’s best activities and pastimes. Don’t forget, this area is a playground for all manner of tastes.

Other advantages include not having to sail for 24-36 hours to get to the sites, the international airport of Los Cabos is 30 minutes from the dive centre and the diving/accommodation/activities is often far cheaper.
